Webcasting in Educationl: How to plan and conduct a hand-held technology based, student webcasting workshop.

Tue 4:00 – 4:45PM — Governors Ballroom 6
Eric P. Miller, Winchester Public Schools / Dynamic Classroom LLC.

This presentation will demonstrate how teachers, can plan and conduct a student-centered, “Webcast Historian” program, that unleashes; hand-held technology, multimedia software, and student creative energy. It is based on Eric Miller’s experiences developing a program that melded the latest educational technology with Winchester’s rich Civil War history.

This presentation will demonstrate how teachers can use inexpensive hand-held technology and free software to make the past come alive for their students. The “Webcast Historian” program shows how students may discover their local history thru the lens of technology. See students use technology to explore, interpret, and document our local museums, cemeteries, and battlefields.

We will examine the planning process which included; the selection of hand-held technology hardware, software considerations, logistical concerns, the student selection process, and the requisite coordination with various local historical organizations and sites.

Using actual classroom situations we will demonstrate how the students were introduced to the technology and its proper use. What hand-held technological applications were selected and why. We will demonstrate the use of such devices as Flip video cameras, digital cameras, and digital voice recorders.

The selection and use of multimedia applications such as Windows Movie Maker and Photostory 3 will be examined and demonstrated. Examples of student produced media will be used to illustrate this presentation.
